Re: My sister's cancerstory

ZANDHOVEN - It was Worldcancerday yesterday worldwide for people battling cancer. Ann Van der Velde (29) from Pulle testified Tuesday courageously in Reyers Laat.

"My phone has not stopped ringing today," Ann said a day later. "I also got a lot of facebook messages. That testimony on television I found more difficult than in a newspaper. I do not always find my words because I wanted so many things tell, as the memorybox that I make for my son. But Kathleen Cools is a very sweet woman, she made me feel at ease. "

Ann is a single mom of Nyo (4). He was almost three when Ann on July 8, 2013 was that she had metastatic skin cancer. (melanoma) "In 2008 I had already a malignant melanoma removal. But there was no need for radiation, because there were no metastases. A few years later I got a tumor in the same place in my leg, and then another. Still, it came as a complete surprise when the oncologist in the summer of 2013 said that there were metastases in my lymph nodes and organs such as liver and my pancreas. He talked about weeks or months. Enjoy life, he said. "

Ann was just about to return to school. "I wanted to go to Lier to study A1in Nursing. Suddenly I no longer had long-term plans. My biggest concern was for Nyo. I was so afraid he would forget me. What do you remember about your childhood when you were three? So I'm going to make a memory box with my favorite books, favorite movie, the dress of my first communion, and little letters I write to him. Nyo who can then open at key moments in his life. "
Ann thought of a bucket list of things that they definitely wanted to do before she died. Crazy things like bungee jumping or a trip around the world. "But I soon realized that the most important and most of all that I do, as much as possible to experience beautiful moments with Nyo. I would so much have been possible for him, bring him to school, put him to bed. He is a happy child. In the beginning I told him about the monsters in my stomach, but we talk less and less about. Because I do not want to burden him with it, and also because I actually really feel good moment. "

Ann follows an experimental therapy to inhibit the tumors, which strikes wonderfully. "I work a few hours a week, even back in the hospitality industry. My boss and colleagues are super sweet. If I have a bad day, they show understanding. "
For now her condition is stable. "On average, the experimental therapy lasts eleven months. So I'm already six months longer good with it. Then I can do other experimental therapies, but it is seen whether that strike as well. "

Ann agrees that there is talk about cancer. "The disease has many faces. Not all cancer patients are bald or constantly tired. About skin cancer, most people know not much. I used often under the sun, and the solarium or sun unprotected as precipitating factors for skin cancer as smoking is lung cancer. It is important that people are aware of it. "

I was gonna ask you on FB how she was doing when I saw your display picture! But I didn't want to seem intrusive on your status, haha.

Hope she gets the "all clear" sign. <3 <3

Thank you all for your kind pm's!

My sister is still going strong: we are in our month 27!!! The combo of pills normally has an average of 11,5 months so we are grateful.
New medicine (Keytruda, Nivolumab) are being approved everywhere so if we do need it (we strongly hope never) we hope this is our saviour.

Friday July 31 we have new scans and feel positive about them.
But still all thumbs and positive energy is welcome!
Thanks you guys!

thank you Bubble_Butt!

She still is doing good but she has a side effect: high blood pressure. We have to get that under control because it isn't allowed in the trail. if we can't control it, she will have to lower dosis or even quit. this last 2 weeks it is been staying low so hoping it will stay this way.

we also got message her onc is leaving the hospital. heavy news as he knows my sister, her file/life and condition for the last 2 years. not sure what we will be doing!

High blood pressure is no joke. :( I hope it can be stabilized.

Also, I know how disheartening a doctor leaving can be. I can't imagine how bad it's to lose an oncologist that you've been close to. My mom's recently left her practice, too. :(

I hope your sister continues to do well. Thinking of all of you!

I'm glad she's still stable. :) I hope they find out what's causing it, though (so it can be treated), and that it's something minor. <3
